The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative features an active Teen Advisory Council made up of high school students in Jackson County who are Peer Educators and advocates for sexual health in their respective schools.

Duties of Teen Leaders/Mentors include:

• Attend monthly meetings to provide feedback on programming and assist in implementing projects for TPPI activities for an average of 4-5 hours per month
• Act as a confidential, non-judgmental resource for peers on sexuality and reproductive health, providing accurate information and referrals
• The TPPI believes that parents are the primary educators when it comes to sexual values and health. Teen Advisory Council members should encourage teens to talk to their parents or other trusted adults whenever possible
• Serve as a mentor to assigned 10-14 year old youth participants in the Get REAL Summer Program

Benefits of Being a Teen Advisory Council Member:
• Public speaking, empathy, and listening skills
• Professional development, leadership, time management, and decision making skills
• Being the voice of teens in Jackson County regarding teen culture and pregnancy prevention
• Counts as volunteer hours towards graduation as required by local school district
• Great for college applications and resume experience

The Teen Advisory Council meets once a month on the 3rd Sunday at Cornerstone Christian Church, 2395 W. High St, Jackson, MI 49203.

If you are a teen who is interested in becoming part of the TPPI Teen Advisory Council to represent your school, contact Michelle White at 768-2150 or Janelle Brown Buchler at 768-1637 at the Jackson County Health Department.
